The other day, last Monday in fact, marked the 10th anniversary of the death of Kurt Cobain, which naturally got me downloading. I have since re-collected all of the Nirvana stuff I had before my hard drive crashed, plus a few more, which included a whole pile of unreleased b-sides and some other nice rarities.
Listening to that old stuff reminds me of a simpler time. Before the pressures of adult life, before the internet was widespread, before I became so thoroughly jaded.
In a way, it sort of resembles the of the 'teen-angst' music of today, which makes sense considering that Nirvana is what made all of that stuff possible commercially. There is one glaring difference, however; Nirvana is far, far better than 99.99999% of it. Not in terms of sound quality, certainly, and often not in terms of technical skill, but definitely it is more honest and true. You can feel the power behind it, whereas today's formulaic crap is just that; crap, churned out using a boring old formula to the record company's specification. Today's 'alternative' seems so contrived and tame in comparison to Nirvana.
