I've had my SVX for about a week now, and it's time for a transmission rebuild. I first noticed the flare from 2nd to 3rd gear after I bought it of course, so it was too late to take it back. Hopefully the warranty will cover most of the work.
I'm kind of torn about what to do. Should I just add an inline filter, auxilliary cooler, and have it rebuilt? Should I swap in the 5-speed? or take the plunge and go for the 6-speed? or perhaps I should rebuild the 4EAT but beef it up a little? I just don't know what to do!!!
Posted by Ron at November 26, 2003 01:09 PMDude, that sucks! Oh wait - what's a transmission?
Posted by: Luke at November 26, 2003 10:25 PMA lot of money, that's what a transmission is.
Transmission shop quoted me (without actually having looked at the car) about $1,500 parts and labour to fix it, I'm guessing more. It gets worse from here...
Beefing up the 4EAT automatic that's in there now is likely going to run about $1,000 extra. This entails removing a part inside called the valvebody (I have no clue what it does) and shipping it to a shop in New Jersey where they improve it somehow (no clue what they do to it), then ship it back to be reinstalled when the rest of the work is done.
The swap to a 5-speed manual transmission from a WRX (less failure-prone) runs about $5,800 after conversion to Canadian Dollars (the place that'll do it is in Tacoma Washington).
The swap to the WRX STi 6-speed gearbox (ideal solution) is nearly out of the question; almost $7,000 just for the fricken parts! That's from a shop near Toronto. Probably $10k by the time they're done... that's almost as much as I paid for the whole car...

Posted by: Tristram at June 13, 2004 06:12 PMBuy a new front diff pinion from Subaru.... along with a new crown gear and have Wolf Transmissions in Toronto rebuild it.
Then send Subaru a letter stating how unhappy you are with their product.
We all are.
