the weekend, gone already

This weekend was just far too short. I worked for 11 straight days, and my 2 days off seemed pathetic and inadequate in comparison.

I pooched it a bit, though I did get some shopping done at least. Also, at the insistence of my sister, we also took in the latest Harry Potter flick. I don’t really feel like giving a review, but the quickie version is this: the movie feels like a Coles Notes™ version of the book. It was basically boiled down to just the story essentials, with little room for character development. Fine for casual fans, and anyone who has already read the books will already know everything else anyway.

We did manage to squeeze in time to do some more unpacking and furniture arranging. Little by little, progress is made. And this is not news exactly, but I desperately need more book shelves. Also, the TV is set up, but game consoles are still upstairs at Jen’s place. Setting up consoles at this time would be quite counter-productive though. I’ll try to remember to get some pics up when everything is more or less where it’s going to stay.

Anyway, time for work, so I’m out.

for a good cause

This weekend was my first break from working in 11 days. Not a record by any means, but it does go a long way to explaining the lack of updates.

On Saturday, while out shopping downtown at the Galleria, we encountered a small display of activists campaigning on behalf of Amnesty International, Oxfam, and the International Action Network on Small Arms in the Control Arms campaign. Essentially, this campaign seeks to slow down the unrestricted trade of small arms around the world and destroy exsisting stockpiles when they can convince armed groups to do lay down their weapons. I also signed a petition to release a human rights activist, who was being held as a political prisoner in Kazakhstan.

I told the group’s leader that I’d like to help out more, so I’m going to email him and see what I can do.

floçons de neige

Whee! Today we got our first real snowfall of the year, here in London. It’s quite pretty and white right now, but I know in a few weeks it will be brown, grey, and awful. I’ll enjoy it for the time being though.

neat-o

Last night I dreamt I was a time-lord. Wow. My master plan to get out of the bad situation that the master and his cronies put me in was so awesome that even I didn’t see it coming. The setting was some kind of futuristic “white city” where peace and order reigned. I don’t remember much else…

A Cat-tastrophe

This is one of the promised entries I previously mentioned, the one I was waiting on the pictures for. I was too lazy to upload them from my camera. Yes, I am that lazy.

While I was staying with Jen, we had a little mishap with the catbox at one point.

Moving and laziness

So, no posts for a little while. This is, as the title implies, mostly due to my laziness, and also my recent move-in, which was not at all as seamless as I predicted.

U-haul boned me out of a truck, so I had to scramble last minute. The storage unit overbilled me, which also sucks. They say they’ll reimburse me, but we’ll see about that. And, of course it took a lot longer than anticipated.

At least I have a ‘real’ internet connexion again, which I’m now sharing with my sister wirelessly. It works decently and reliably enough without a range booster, even from here on the 8th floor all the way to the 11th floor where she is (though I might pick one up anyway).

I actually got hooked up on monday, but as I said, I’ve been lazy, so I haven’t posted. I also haven’t bothered to post the other two posts I promised. One is waiting on pictures from my camera that I’ve been too lazy to upload, and the other is waiting on text I’ve been too lazy to write. So, safe to say, things are more or less back to normal.

Also, car stuff: I went to see a mechanic that my boss referred me to. He mostly works on Porsche, but has done other things in the past. A real ‘top gun’ in the business, I am led to believe. I met him yesterday, but he shot me down, no pun intended. He now only works on Porsches; trying to ‘keep things simple’ or somesuch. I can understand that, as seemingly odd as the combination of ‘Porsche’ and ’simple’ are in the same sentence.

After that, I went to try the other mechanic that my boss told me about, and I may have better luck there. They are at least willing to see how much work is involved before they say no. They’ve done the kind of work I’m talking about before, though mostly on “muscle cars” and the like. Having them work on my car would be like letting a veteranarian do surgery on a human; the theory is similar, but everything is different in practise. We’ll see though; my boss wouldn’t have trusted just anyone with his classic Corvette.

To further bore the hell out of the non-gearheads reading this…

Yay

Well, my lease is signed, finally. We’re pretty much all set to move in this weekend. I still have to book a U-Haul, but it shouldn’t be too busy. My parents are coming down to help out, along with Meghan’s mum.

Meghan already ordered up our cable internet for the new place, which will be installed on Monday. It’s from Rogers, sadly, but they do have a deal with the company that runs the building. Basically, we get 4$ off per month if we go on a 12-month contract, which normally, I’d be saying, “hell no!” to but we already had to sign a 12-month lease, so I guess it doesn’t matter. It’s only the 3-megabit service, but after being on 128kbps DSL, it will feel like warp speed.

Rogers is pretty lame in that way; all their competitors offer 5 or 6 megabit ’standard’ service and 10-megabit ‘elite’ service. I hate how there is no real competition in the Canadian cable internet market. I think Shaw and Rogers and Cogeco should all have to compete in the same markets, especially when Rogers has a stranglehold on almost all the really big population centres and offers what is by far the slowest, most restrictive service. Ah, well… at least it’s not Bell.
