Patches

Yesterday, patch 1.0.1 was released for Firefox to fix a few security holes that were discovered recently. The patch also covers a few miscellaneous bugs that have been discovered. So what are you waiting for? Go grab it now!

Though I’m curious, why couldn’t this patch be implemented through the update feature?

One moment of relative silence

When I woke up this morning, the world had a distinctive sombre cast to it. Now, at least, I know why, via Luke. Maybe saying that sounds a bit ‘flaky’ or something, but that doesn’t make the feeling less true. There isn’t even anything else to say about it, really…

random web shit

Have you ever just started punching in random URLs, just to see what comes up? If you have, you’ll know that more often than not, you end up seeing a “coming soon” page, a “cybersquatter” site, or get redirected to some corny start page that you can’t seem to get rid of (CoolWWWSearch, anyone?). Sometimes, however, you hit the proverbial jackpot and get exactly what you wanted, or at least something funny. Sometimes, you even get both. Sadly, this particular example seems to have been abandoned sometime after May 2002.

awesome

Just trawling CBC the other day and found this article about a new research project founded to study the effects of music on the brain. In particular, they seem to be focusing on the developmental stage, so they need young participants. Other more rudimentary research has indicated that musical training has a profound effect on the developing human mind, with survey-style studies showing as much as a 30-point difference (increase) on the controversial IQ scale. Whether you put any stock in that research or not, the fact remains that people from poor backgrounds are seldom able to afford music lessons in their earlier childhood, so this project plans to use disadvantaged kids that wouldn’t otherwise get a chance to study music. I think that’s wonderful; everyone should have the chance to do it if they want to.

Pop-under?!?!

I was downloading a new version of Gens today, which is a Sega Genesis emulator for Windows, and during the download, I got what called itself a pop-under advertisement. It really took me by surprise, mostly because since switching to Mozilla sometime in 2003, I haven’t received a singe popup of any kind.

convection dreams

When I awoke this day, I felt as though I’d not slept much at all, or perhaps too much. I was feeling extra crispy. It was the usual amount of sleep, so all I could do was blame it on Convection Dreams. Money being caught in a steel filter in the toilet bowl swirly. What an odd image. Dreams have been very potent lately…

close call

Yesterday I nearly “lost it” in the mental sense of the term. I don’t even know why; it’s not like I’m under that much stress. Certainly nowhere near the amount when I was network admin at ATS, or even during my tenure as fix-it monkey at Clockwork. In fact, I don’t think it’s job-related at all, and only partially career-related at most.

forgot

I almost forgot… it’s been over a week. I think that qualifies as forgetting.

Snapped a pic of the old water tank after removal…. *shudder* I still can’t believe I washed myself, my clothes, and my dishes in water that came out of THAT:

Bah

Damned temp agency… they calld late last week; apparently I’m back on this week. Unfortunate, but necessary.

It’a all about momentum, I think. I had no trouble doing the daily grind when I first got the job, but then christmas break came, and I had a taste of freedom again. So going back after that was torturous. I found it more and more difficult to drag my sorry ass out of bed every morning. 6:05 comes early, after all. I have a feeling it will be even worse this time. I’m on afternoons, so getting up won’t be at issue, but lately I haven’t been able to force myself to stay awake much past midnight, which could be a problem.

Enough whining. Hopefully I’ll have something positive to report soon.

like a double-bitted toilet bowl brush

As early as late last week, I had begun to feel that awful, sinking feeling that always goes along with an impending return to work. Naturally, I harboured secret desires that the industry slowdown would cause continued layoffs, and that I would again be a victim of same. The logical part of my brain, the part responsible for delayed gratification, and my understanding of the concept that working = money, which in turn allows me to continue to eat, had a different take on the situation.

Turns out though, that I got my wish: laid off for another two weeks. So, yay, I can lounge for a bit, but not yay, because I was hoping to stow away enough cash to grab some more hard drives, which would, in turn, provide me the space necessary to install World of Warcraft and join the Tubgirls guild in their quest for the domination of Gilneas.
