more random flamebait

Just to join in with just about every other techie with a blog or website, in the vain hope that it will help: for crying out loud, STOP USING INTERNET EXPLORER!!!

Anything is better. As in the case of STDs, abstinence is the only fool-proof solution, but you can take steps to protect yourself. Mozilla. Firefox. Opera. Konqueror. Lynx. Safari. Anything but IE.

Some of the above will require a change of platform. So be it. Most people can live without Microsoft Windows and not even notice. Pretty much the only argument for Windows is the fact that there are plenty of games for it. Most of the Blizzard hits are also available for Mac and run just fine under WINE in Linux. There are Linux ports of FPS games like Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, and great strategy games like Alpha Centauri.

Unfortunately, there are many that won’t run on other platforms, and that’s why I’m being a hypocritical wanker and not making the switch away from M$ myself. But mark my words, Microsoft Windows has its uses, and they are few.

Digressing somewhat, to other internet news, this scares the living crap out of me. When speaking of piracy, I often state that, “no, the FBI will not be rappelling through your windows and kicking down your door just because you copied [insert any media here].” Looks like I may have to take that back.

Fortunately, I live in Canada, a place where our courts have decided, time and time again to protect us from greedy, litigious organisations (like the RIAA). O, Canada!

Woo-hoo!

When you think of studies, what comes to mind? Boring, lab-controlled testing procedures, people in white coats, maybe rats. Not too exciting. Not something I’d usually want to take part in, unless it was a sleep study.

I’d want to take part in this one, however.

Harry Potter, eat your heart out

I found this and this the other day. Awesome.

My friend Trevor and I had this very same idea one day while stitting in physics class. We figured that’s how the Klingon, and probably Romulan cloaking devices must work.

at last

I think I’ve finally heard an American make some sense regarding the invasion of Iraq. Okay, so there have been quite a few others, namely Michael Moore, but this has likely been among the first politicians that got any decent publicity. The others all seem cowed to backing Bush, even if they don’t believe that what he is doing is the right thing to do. I guess the desire for power overcomes conscience, most of the time.

rock on

I’m not normally one to do this, but I’ve listened to Far Beyond the Sun by none other than Yngwie Malmsteen about 10 times in a row while writing this morning.

in dreams

Last night, besides the many other (Totally Bizarre) things that went through my mind’s reality filters unchecked, was a dream that someone linked to one of my entries here from another blog or website. I remember in my dream being kinda pumped about that.

How might one find out if this has happened? It makes sense that this fancy-pants software, designed around something as potentially egotistical as an online diary, would have some function for this…. inquiring egos want to know who’s been talking about them.

Magnetic?

Does anyone, besides me, think that making the next generation of RAM magnetic is a bad idea? Non-volatility is all fine and dandy, and this technology seems a fine replacement to some types of storage, but if you ask me, we should be moving to something less vulnerable to magnetic influence.

best yet.

Just watched Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban at the local Galaxy cinema tonight. In short, I thought it was the best one yet.

SPOILER ALERT!!!

Geekgasm, part 2

If these are the kind of guys they give pilot’s licenses to and put in the air, no wonder the terrorists slipped through their fingers. Small wonder that I prefer driving… unless, of course, it’s over the ocean.

Big Blue has taken steps to integrating optical interconnects in some future systems. Crazy shit. I remember discussing the merits of the then-theoretical technology with Luke back in highschool.

Need more proof that Microsoft will be building buying an AntiVirus suite? I thought not.

In more Micro$haft news, the X-box 2 sucks already: no backward compatibility. While I understand the technical reasons for this, it makes little sense from a consumer point of view. Half the reason I bought a PS2 was due to backward compatibility, and I likely never would have got a GameCube if it weren’t for the GameBoy Player.

You don’t see this too often: Intel following AMD. Usually it’s the other way around. Now Intel is integrating a 64 bit extension onto their next CPU line. Will it be AMD64-compatible? Who knows; not likely. But still, it does indicate that AMD’s gamble may have been a wise one.

I didn’t really need Yet Another reason to buy a Bimmer or Mini Cooper, but they went ahead and gave me one anyway. Actually, after visiting the more affluent areas of the province, and hence, the country, where BMWs are basically dime-a-dozen, I don’t even want one anymore. I mean, if some guy just gave me one, I wouldn’t complain, but given a choice, I’d make a different one.

If you have epilepsy, it has been discovered that your dog could possibly warn of impending seisure. Interesting. I wonder if that meant that my old dog could tell when he was about to have one?

Check the third story down. Lollapalooza has gone to hell so much that it’s being cancelled this year. There are a couple of decent acts there, like Sonic Youth, who were also there when I went in 1995, but other than that… Goes to show you just how many sheep there are out there that will plug into whatever is popular at the time.

Ah, America: where your politicians can be likened to rock stars and enjoy similar popularity. Oh wait, that happened here too, but it was in the 70’s… Seriously though, I wonder if anyone would miss Clinton this much if the current president wasn’t screwing things up so badly.
