Previously, there was a discussion on neuro-tech about essential software, in which it was determined that Spybot is superior to Ad-Aware. I have, however, discovered an inherent flaw in the way the Spybot program works; it won’t scan additional drives for some odd reason, nor could I find an option anywhere to set the program to scan drives other than the system drive. Meanwhile, with Ad-Aware, you can do this. To confirm the hypothesis, I ran both programs, one after the other on the same computer with the same suspect drive hooked up as Secondary Master. Ad-Aware caught some registry keys, bad cookies, and files whereas Spybot missed them, presumably because it did not scan that drive, since both programs had the latest updates. I touched the drive during the process and could not feel it working while running Spybot.
So, in conclusion, while Spybot does catch more nasties, and is better for scanning your own PC, Ad-Aware seems more useful in my line of work where when scanning for viruses and spyware we often just pull the drive and hook it up on our testbench. Now for those systems where it is still possible to download and install a program, Spybot is the better choice.

Um, yeah. So there.
Seriously, I hope all of you receive what you wanted for xmas and that your gifts to others bring much joy. That sentiment sounds much less gay in my head, trust me.

Ok, I just found my dream-book. Go check out this throbbing beast. Combines (slightly outlandish) style, performance, and panache into one sleek, yet powerful package, just like its namesake. If anyone is stuck on what to buy me for xmas…

It all stemmed from a conversation I had with Luke a little while ago; there simply isn’t enough time to do everything you want to in life. That, of course, leaves you to choose a combination of that which you either must do, or that which give you the most personal satisfaction. It’s kind of annoying.
There are too many interests I have and facets to my (and presumably most peoples’) personality to satisfy all of them. It kinda sucks, but it is beginning to sink in that I’ll likely never be the computer guru that Luke is (or even some of the folk that post to his blog), and I’ll likely never be the musician I’ve always wanted to. I’ll not likely possess the mechanical skills and knowledge to rip into the transmission on my SVX and fix it myself. I may never get to see some of the places on this earth that intrigue me. These things are only the crudest and most easily vocalised of the desires of which I speak, but they do give the basic idea.
What’s left then? Am I merely a collection of links on a virtual web page? Light on content, but a lot of variety. What’s the point of that?
Sure, I suppose I could become better at some of the aforementioned things, but not all of them simultaneously. Something would have to give somewhere, and that’s the unfortunate part. Sometimes I feel like such an uneducated rube.

You’d think that people would have other things on their minds right now besides computers, but apparently not. We are so swamped at work right now it’s not even funny. The benches are full, the backlog is spilling onto the floor, and I just worked another 12-hour shift and barely made a dent. Five hours on Sunday alone, we pulled in over $1,400. Crazy.

..whom I just had the distinct pleasure of meeting this evening; Conan. I’m not kidding. He brought his son, Thor, with him as well. I’m really serious. Some dude from Thessalon, and his lovely family. I didn’t get to hear the others’ names, unfortunately. They had to be into either fantasy role-playing an awful lot, or drugs. Perhaps both. I mean, I dig fantasy fiction, and science fiction, but I’d never name my kid Gandalf, for example.

Last night, I had the strangest dream – I dreamt I went to Japan to visit Luke. Somehow, I drove there from Canada in my SVX. The ‘Mescaline Guy’ from the first Matrix flick was in it, so was Dave Mirra from the PS2 BMX game (which I’ve never played, by the way so how the fuck did I know who he was?), some weird Japanese girl offered me some ice cubes that were shaped into little scupltures and had stuff written in Japanese on them. The little girl vampire (I forget her name at the moment) from Anne Rice’s Interview series was there as well, which for some reason in my dream made total sense. After I got to my room (I was staying at this neat villa), I made myself a toasted roast beef sandwich, but then got all paranoid that it was some kind of taboo. Sometimes I love being an ignorant westerner. That dream felt like I was on drugs or something…
On the plus side, there were no incidences of tentacle porn, and neither little girl got violated. Hm, I guess it wasn’t Japan after all….

I am, as I said, a lazy, lazy bastard.
One week and nary an entry to be had. I guess things have been brisk lately with the evil xmas shopping season upon me, but really, I only work half days, what excuse do I really have?
I’ve got one coming for later though… plus some stuff from last week that I never got around to.

Found another wicked geek rock project: The NESkimos. Add that to the Minibosses as well as Virt & the Smash Brothers and we’re accumulating quite the collection of VGmusic. Insert nerdy giggle here.

So Luke points me towards this wicked side-scrolling shooter demo for the PC called Storm Angel, and there I am, in the middle of being awed by the general excellence of the game when, BAM! Stop Error. After the mandatory reboot, I tried again… I lasted a little longer but it happened again. I figured it might be my drivers, so I updated them and now it won’t even run. Bummer.
