Switching Debian from testing to unstable.
Ron, I’m looking at you. Open up the /etc/apt/sources.list file with whatever editor you’re using (vi, nano, pico, emacs, etc) and change it to look like this:
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib
Then from the command line type “apt-get update”. This will pull down the package index and let you actually upgrade the system. To do the full upgrade and get newer packages for virtually everything, type “apt-get dist-upgrade”. It’ll be smart and resolve all the dependencies and what not.
Finally, run “dselect” and clean up everything that you don’t want, and allow it to select important packages that might have been left out in the last phase. dselect has a pretty good online help system, so you should have no problem.

Well, that went okay, I think… thanks.

After much chaos, X is back, though not like it was before. All I get is a basic Gnome/KDE shell, no fancy-pants window manager.
No wonder you get paid the proverbial big bucks - this stuff is hard!

Okay, KDE is back; I’m a retard. I’m posting from it now, using Konqueror. Still no sound, but at least things are generally working again.

Ahhh. . . You wait ’till I go up North, and away from the net to install Debian. Break a Mandrake Fanboy’s heart. Still, good show. Once you get everything running and configured under Debian you should be good to go until the end of time. Good luck!
