Possibly in more ways than one. I just took Chie to the airport; we had a great time, even if it was only four days that she was here. I remained pretty much disconnected from my computer (though I did use my Blackberry quite often). Tons of pictures to post of course, but for now I need sleep.
E. Coli. Me and one of the guys I travelled with got violently sick from yesterday until today, with horrible emanations coming from both ends. I’m much better now, just relaxing and recovering.
Yesterday morning at work I started getting really, really sick and having to run to the bathroom a lot. All I had was one meeting in the afternoon and I was planning to go home after that. When it was finally time to leave, I was taking a taxi back to the apartment but then changed my mind and went straight to the hospital (which conveniently is next door to my place).
The doctor on call in the emergency room hooked me up with an IV to the usual saline since I was massively dehydrated. I took in 4 bags of the stuff (I’m guessing that’s measured in pints), and ended up just sleeping the whole time they pumped me up. All in all I was in the hospital bed for about three hours. It definitely sucked.
I am doing much, much better now.
I spent the night yesterday in Jakarta, we had an early morning meeting today and all the flights were booked. Hotel was nice, country was fucked.
And then I’ve got to stay in a hotel again on Wednesday night for a Thursday morning meeting. So just “touching base” and vouching for my being alive.
Again, no updates for a while. I’ve been quite busy at work (in Singapore), doing various product things and building lots of Linux systems. Both parts are good, especially the Linux stuff - digging into the BIOS SMART systems, RAID1 mirroring, other fun things like that. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to go into more detail into that one.
I’m here for I guess four weeks this trip, and I haven’t done much of note yet at all. I spent most of the weekend waiting for repairmen (air conditioning and electrical) - and the electrical repairman didn’t even show up. He said he forgot about the appointment… Just minor bullshit really.
Chie is going to come over here and visit though on the 24th of this month, so I have two days of leave booked to hang out with her in Singapore and show her around.
That’s about it. Uh, talk amongst yourselves or something.
Last weekend Chie and I were in Otsuka, which is the old downtown core of Tokyo (it’s moved). The last two pictures are of our neighborhood in Shinjuku. So let’s see how many megabytes I can get the front page of this site to be:
Ron, I’m looking at you. Open up the /etc/apt/sources.list file with whatever editor you’re using (vi, nano, pico, emacs, etc) and change it to look like this:
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib
Then from the command line type “apt-get update”. This will pull down the package index and let you actually upgrade the system. To do the full upgrade and get newer packages for virtually everything, type “apt-get dist-upgrade”. It’ll be smart and resolve all the dependencies and what not.
Finally, run “dselect” and clean up everything that you don’t want, and allow it to select important packages that might have been left out in the last phase. dselect has a pretty good online help system, so you should have no problem.
So we got moved into the new place obviously, about a month ago in fact. I’ve been in Singapore and Chie’s been at her parents since the funeral, so neither of us have had much opportunity to actually live in the place until this week.
Unfortunately I’m going back to Singapore this Monday, so that’s only eight days that I get to spend here. So far it’s been cool though, and the new apartment is great. Much, much larger than the last place, clocking in at 47 square meters. A little bit cheaper too.
Anyways, we spent last Sunday just messing around in the area (Shinjuku), which is the same area that my first place in Japan was.
This street performer was totally awesome. His act was about 30 minutes long, and at the end he must have pulled in about five hundred dollars - easily.
