GMail.

I got a Google Mail account courtsey of Nelson Minar. I haven’t played with it much, but the interface seems extremely well-designed. More later. I’d like to see how decent the spam filter is, so:

luke.reeves@gmail.com

Update: Only two hours after posting the address I received spam. The GMail service didn’t block or filter it.

Damn, I want one of those :(

Since there’s so much space, can you upload your old mail?

No, you can’t. It doesn’t support IMAP so there’s no way to put e-mail up there.

But even a gigabyte isn’t enough for me to switch. My mail has been way, way past that mark for a while.

Anyways, apparently after some time in the system you’re allowed to invite people. If I ever get these mythical invites I’ll send you one.

I’m on that gmail update list, and despite the controversy surrounding the “targeted ads” (blah, blah, blah), I’d like to try it out. The pictures released so far look appealing, too bad about the spam filter though.

the main thing that creeps me out about gmail is not the targeted ads stuff but the fact that they - unless i misread - can keep all your mail even if you deactivate your account or delete mail.

    Luke:
Wow, how many years of email do you have going? I’ve got the same Outlook stuff since mid-1999 (my older eudora and pine mail having been lost to the ages) and it’s only just at 700MB now.

That policy was clarified a week or so ago - They will not be hording your mail when you leave.

    Rob:
Transmetropolitan was an excellent series! If you dig it, you might try out The Invisibles by Grant Morrison, or Terminal City.

The retention is strictly for emergency purposes (as in regular backups).

Tim O’Reilly (of O’Reilly books) has a pretty breakdown of gmail.

Tech Knight: Good god man - The Invisibles was ass kicking in series one for about 10 issues, but Grant Morrison can’t keep a comic book sensible for more than a dozen issues unless the editors reign him in.

Transmet does kick serious ass though. In the last 10 years, I’d say the best three long running comic series have been Transmet, Preacher and now Powers by Bendis. Heck - anything by Bendis is amazing.

    All else is crap.

Haha, Morrison managed to keep his run on Animal Man pretty sensible up until his last two issues. :)

Rusty, I feel your pain. I’m in exactly the same boat, and have been posting non-stop on my 2+ year old blogger blog to convince them that it’s still active.

    So far, no invitation.

No wonder you get spam in two hours after you post your GMail address PUBLICLY on a weblog… You are probably not aware how good the crawlers got over the years…

Yes, I’m aware of the fact that spammers would pick up on my address quickly. The point of that exercise is to see how well the Google spam filters would perform (and after a week or so, they’re doing quite well).
