Wonderful Japan.

We went out to Bic Camera tonight (that’s not a typo) so Chie could pickup Dragonquest V, which came out yesterday. There was a huge damned lineup to get it, but it was worth it since it seems quite cool.

What was even more cool was outside the store a bunch of salespeople were selling the new Docomo 900i series phones. One of the Java games included on the phone is a port of Final Fantasy I. Mmmm, I want.

I’ve heard that when new Dragon Quest games are released in Japan, there are lineups outside stores FOR DAYS!! People camping out, etc, similar to the release of a new Star Wars movie over here.

I’m definitely looking forward to the North American release of DQV, though thankfully, there will likely be no lineups to get a copy.

Hey Luke, just a thought. Did you ever consider splitting your blog’s main page into a (1) [Top] What’s up with Luke / General Commentary / Softcore Geek Section, and (2) [Bottom] a Hardcore geek section? Most of the threads seem to fall into on of the two categories, and judging by who posts on what, you seem to have two camps of people posting on each type of thread (with good crossover between the two mind you).

Ron: Yeah, but - Final Fantasy on the phone! That’s infinitely more cool than DragonQuest :-)

James: I’ve thought about that, and I may do just that in the future.

Have you tried re-playing FF1? Ugh, it’s sooooo dullllll.

Now gimme Chrono Trigger on my phone (hell, put it on my gba!) and we’ll talk. :)

FF1 isn’t too bad - I started playing it again when I got Origins and got right into into. Then I forgot half the discs I own in Toronto :-(

It’s interesting that it’s a J2ME application - theoretically, DRM issues aside, you can use it on other devices (and also you can probably decompile it fairly easily).

Yeah, Origins made great leaps and bounds in making FF1 playable, by our moderns standards. I don’t think I could handle the original version, but the remake was playable and actually enjoyable as such, without all of the frustrations. Hooray, no more “Ineffective!” And War Mech was actually beatable. Still, I’m glad it wasn’t any longer.

Apparently Square Enix is doing a shooter for the North American cell-games market. If Einhander is any indication, it should be a lot of fun.

Ah, my bad - I’ve never played the FF Origins or FF Anthology versions

    My god…

    FF1 on a cellphone.

That is a dangerous, dangerous device to let loose on the public.
